A guide to the Australian Government’s eSafety information

The Australian Government’s Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has produced a fantastic online resource that is free and available to all members of the community. In a user friendly way, it outlines most of what parents and carers want to know about social networking platforms, online gaming sites and general internet browsing.

The information is concise, accurate, up to date (at this stage) and from my experience, what a parent or carer wants to know. It lists each program or application as it relates to:

• Social networking eg. Facebook and Instagram
• Gaming sites eg. Mindcraft and Club Penguin
• Browsing eg. Google and Bing

The site outlines each program listing the requirements, functionality and parental considerations specifically covering:

• A brief overview of the program
• Age requirements
• Privacy settings
• Reporting abuse capabilities
• Cost
• A link to the site
• Tips for Parents and carers

From my observations and conversations within school communities this resource is what parents and carers are looking for but are largely unaware of its existence.

Any parent or carer worldwide that wants to know anything about the programs or apps their children are using are highly encouraged to visit this site and to share the link with friends.
