Safer Internet Day 2019 – ‘Together for a Better Internet’

Tuesday February 5th marks Safer Internet Day (SID) for 2019. This annual event is recognised and supported by over 140 countries as a day to educate and work together as a community to create a better internet, especially for its younger users.

What does the event mean?

It was in 2004 that the first SID was held as an initiative of the EU Safe Borders project, and it has continued to grow into the international event that it is today.

This year, the campaign slogan is ‘Together for a Better Internet’ which has been broken down into 4 skills that individuals can learn known as the 4 R’s.

Respect – I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated.

Responsibility – I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong.

Reasoning – I question what is real.

Resilience – I get back up from tough situations.

The Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner is the official supporter of the day in Australia and has organised a number of activities, events and resources for people to get involved in this great cause.

How to become involved?

There are many ways you can join in this initiative in your workplace, community or your child’s school. The eSafety commissioner website has:

> Pledge boards and selfie masks

> Powerpoint presentations and posters

> Resource kits for schools (including slides, links to an educational video game and classroom exercises)

> Resource kits for businesses and communities (including sample social media posts and newsletters)

> Web banners and social media tiles and GIFs

> Opportunities to register as a Supporter

Alongside this, schools are able to register for a virtual classroom presentation on internet safety focusing on the meaning of the 4 R’s that go for about 30-40 mins.
